Bolsena Lake

Bolsena with its azure-hued lake is an evocative location in northern Lazio, called Tuscia. The enchanting location is reachable from Rome and very close to Viterbo (the city of the Popes), and not for from adjacent Tuscany.

The city castle – Rocca Monaldeschi – was built circa 1100 upon commission by Pope Adrian IV, in the aim of defending Bolsena against Federico Barbarossa. In addition to the lake and castle, Bolsena stands out for its quaint alleyways that intersect in the middle of town.

Bolsena and Agriresort Le Porcine are the ideal starting points for a trip through the magnificent surrounding countryside dotted by olive grovesvineyards, and hazelnut trees, not to mention a wealth of locations that feature history and art of Roman or Etruscan origin, such as Tuscania, Montefiascone, and Civita di Bagnoregio.

By Car

From Rome
From Rome, take Via Cassia toward Viterbo, passing through Sutri, Capranica, and Vetralla. Once in Viterbo, take the short connecting route to Viterbo Nord, and exit direction Bolsena/Siena. Follow signs for Siena.
Alternatively, take the A1 toll road to the Orte exit. Continue in the direction of Viterbo and stay on the highway until Montefiascone/Bagnaia.
In both cases, follow signs for Montefiascone and Bolsena/Siena. Le Porcine sits between Bolsena and Montefiascone, at the 108,600km marker on Via Cassia, where you will find a dirt road that leads up a hill to the farmhouse.
From Florence
From Florence take the A1 toll road direction Naples, and exit in Orvieto. Follow signs from Orvieto to Bolsena. When you arrive at the main square in Bolsena, turn to the left toward Montefiascone.
A dirt road leads up a hill to the farmhouse at the 108,600km marker on Via Cassia.

We discourage the use of GPS because they tend to be misleading with regard to the mileage from Via Cassia.

By Airplane

From Rome
Leonardo Da Vinci-Fiumicino Airport to Bolsena takes about 2 hours.
From Florence
Amerigo Vespucci Airport to Bolsena takes about 3 hours.

In both airports it is possible to rent a car to drive comfortably to Agriresort Le Porcine, following the ‘By Car’ instructions above.

By Train

From Rome
Termini and Tiburtina Railway Stations to Bolsena takes about 2 hours.
From Orvieto
Orvieto to Bolsena takes about 30 minutes.

Near the railway stations it is possible to rent a car to drive comfortably to Agriresort Le Porcine following the ‘By Car’ instructions above.
